Explore our Impact

Explore the maps and data dashboards below to get an inside look at the data that SPLASh staff and volunteers work so hard to collect!

SPLASh cleanups take place in diverse ecosystems, targeting shorelines of the Houston Ship Channel, Galveston Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as rivers and bayous. This map displays the locations of all SPLASh trash cleanup events to date (marked by stars) and protected areas (in yellow) where trash cleanups are even more necessary to protect wildlife. Our cleanups help conserve local wildlife and the habitats they depend on.

Explore the data below to better understand the magnitude of the trash problem in the Houston-Galveston region. At each SPLASh cleanup, garbage bags full of litter are gathered and weighed so the total weight of trash removed from each site can be recorded. Trash transects surveys are also conducted. Each piece of trash from a designated area of the cleanup is categorized and counted. The transects provide insight into the most common types of trash littering our region. We have some truly invested volunteers with a passion for protecting our environment and the wildlife that depend on it. Thanks to our volunteers who make this challenging, and often smelly, work possible!

Our data is also entered into the  Texas Litter Database , where it is compiled with data from
other organizations and volunteer groups all across the state of Texas. By bringing all of this information together in one place, we can start to better understand the trash pollution problem and answer questions like: what types of trash are most common? Where is all this trash coming from? What areas are in most need of cleanup efforts?

Visit the Texas Litter Database to explore the data and learn more!
